HOOP CHALLENGE

Hoop Challenge is one discipline of a multifaceted strategic community initiative called Freedom Outreach. Freedom Outreach strategically targets troubled neighborhoods for prayer, free meals, prevention concerts, food distribution, and ministry. It is widely recognized one of New York's most successful initiatives to engage abandoned and other marginalized youth with positive mentoring and legitimate life skills

We saw a need within the surrounding area to reach out to these at-risk children since many of their family members were coming to us for help with substance abuse. Raised in a poverty-stricken environment of drugs and drug-related violence there are no visible means of prevention and intervention. We incorporated the popular sport of basketball combining fundamental skills learned on the courts with the skills needed to succeed in a drug and crime-free life on the streets.

We provide an atmosphere where character is developed through mentoring and positive role model relationships with "coaches, " such h as award winning Vilanova Coach Jay Wright. These coaches and other staff are all volunteers with Teen Challenge or visiting out of state coaches who offer more than basketball skills, they offer them a hand up by encouraging them to find a dream, apply themselves and succeed. Each participate receives a daily lunch, beverages, All Star T-shirt, trophies and prizes.

We also hold a presentation each afternoon hosted by former professional basketball players from the NBA and the WNBA, as well as college coaches from Division One schools. In past camps, Coach Jay Wright from Villanova and Coach Mike Jarvis from St. John's University participated.

In addition, we invite graduates of our Teen Challenge program to share their own personal testimonies of how drug abuse nearly destroyed their lives. We believe sharing the consequences of drug abuse by others is a powerful tool in fighting against and preventing drug abuse among the youth.
